This unit we talked about the people who help us. The students did a role play which was based on a story they learned in class.

When they are learning Chinese as a second language, they are also interested in singing Chinese songs. They have realized that people in the world use different languages to communicate. So learning languages can be fun!

2014-Year1-Unit one

As the old saying said, well begin is half done. I am so proud that my Year 1 CSL students behaved very well in the first unit.

Not only did they learn how to introduce their families,but also they learnt to say I LOVE YOU in Chinese so that they can say to their parents. Well done!

Please ask kids to read the words below to see how many characters they can recognize now.

故事的樂趣

In this unit, the students enjoyed the fun of stories.

 I told them the famous story called Three Little Pigs and found that they showed great interest in it. After telling them the story, I gave each of them one piece of this story and asked them to work together to complete it. They completed this target and found so much fun of working together to retell the story.

Later they were told to make the masks that were used to play the story. During the role play, some of them showed great talent of being an actor which really impressed me. They also acquired the target language during the task.
            

Some of them shared their Chinese books in the class.
 I think students could benefit a lot from reading Chinese books (better with Pinyin).
 

分享玩具 Sharing Toys

The students learned to share their toys this unit. They learned many new words about toys through inquiry. I am so glad that the kids are aware of the importance of being polite when they want to borrow toys from their friends. And they also had so much fun while sharing their toys in front of the class. I can see the big improvement of their listening and speaking in Chinese. Though some of them are still struggling with writing, most of the kids are able to read the characters and write the words they learned.
這個單元孩子們學習了分享自己的玩具。他們通過探索學到了很多新詞。令我欣慰的是，他們在分享玩具的時候都意識到了講禮貌的重要性，並且非常享受這個分享的過程。我看到了很多孩子們的成長和進步，而且大部分孩子的聽說能力都有提高。雖然一些孩子在讀寫方面還有很大困難，大部分的孩子讀寫能力都有所進步。

I am very happy to see that Hero is getting more cofident now. He was acting as a teacher to teach the other kids different shapes in Chinese.

 

Chinese New Year Activities

新春快樂！Happy New Year!
There were many activities that Year 1 students did for Chinese New Year and they really enjoyed themselves. They wrote their best wishes on red papers which they put in the red packets to give to their parents as gifts. They also tried lion dance and drums to celebrate CNY. But what they like most is making dumplings.

 

 

 

Hot pot

It is winter time now in Hong Kong, what do Chinese people like to eat in winter? Of course hot pot!
Since these pupils are learning Chinese, I think they also should learn something about Chinese cultrue.

First, they learned some words about hot pot food by pictures. Then they chose the food they would like to bring for hot pot . And thanks to all the parents, the kids brought the food and shared with the others. I am so glad to see that they have learned how to share and to be caring.

Though I didn't give them any seasoning, they still seemed to like the hot pot and said  "我喜歡吳老師(I like teacher Wu)" . Thanks to these tolerant kids!

 

weather report

The students acted as a weather reporter after putting the Chinese characters in a right sequence and drawing the weather for the current day. Each of them was very excited to do the report and did a great job.
